OSIL are expanding the existing range of IAPSO Standard Seawaters to include a new mid-salinity standard, 20L-Series (salinity 20).

OSIL (Ocean Scientific International Ltd.) have been producing IAPSO Standard Seawater, and a range of other seawater products (including Low Nutrient Seawater and Nutrient Standard Solutions for nutrient analysis), since 1989.

Standard Seawater, as approved by the International Association for Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO), is the only transfer standard for Practical Salinity that is recognized by all the major oceanographic bodies. The standards, which have a precisely known electrical conductivity ratio, are used for the calibration of salinity measurement devices, such as the Guildline Autosal and Portasal salinometers. For over 100 years the comparability of salinity data world-wide has depended on the widespread use of this standard for calibrating laboratory and in-situ instruments.

This new standard compliments the existing range available from OSIL, and its creation is due to high levels of demand from customers. The standard has the added benefit of being an additional reference point for a salinometer linearity check. It is important to know the accuracy of the salinometers’ offset across the working range to improve data quality.

The Linearity Pack available from OSIL will now be supplied with two bottles of each standard: P-Series (salinity 35), 38H-Series, 30L-Series, 20L-Series & 10L-Series. All standards within the IAPSO range are calibrated in Conductivity Ratio and Practical Salinity. The new 20L-Series will be available from June 2014.
