  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • In-depth understanding of Marine Coatings, Hull Coatings, and Anti-Corrosion Coatings, including application and testing using ASTM, ISO, and other industry standards.
    • Expertise in Surface Preparation, Coating Application, Coating Inspection, and Coating Failure Analysis.
    • Familiarity with Marine Maintenance processes and Shipyard Operations.
    • Strong organizational, mathematical, and communication skills.
    • Competence in using laboratory and application equipment safely, with no issues working around hazardous materials.
    • Computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a NACE Coating Inspector and/or FROSIO Certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience in managing projects and coordinating with cross-functional teams in the Maritime Industry.


Description

Purpose of the Job:

The primary purpose of this role is to provide expert technical advice and support for the Marine Coatings (MPC) business, addressing customer needs and ensuring effective risk and liability management. The Marine Coating and Shipyard Support Specialist leverages extensive knowledge of Marine Coatings, Hull Coatings, and Shipyard Coatings, focusing on Anti-Corrosion Coatings, Surface Preparation, Coating Application, and Coating Specifications. This position plays a crucial role in enhancing Corrosion Protection, Marine Maintenance, and Coating Inspection processes, ultimately ensuring the longevity and performance of assets in the Maritime Industry, Shipyard Operations, and Commercial Shipping sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project Management and Support: Accountable for managing and delivering assigned projects, ensuring alignment with customer needs and industry standards.
  • Technical Documentation: Coordinate requests, generate, and maintain technical literature such as technical data sheets, Coating Specifications, emissions reports, and product certifications.
  • Product Certification: Collaborate with internal customers and external agencies to maintain and renew certifications, including NACE Coating Inspector and FROSIO Certification.
  • Customer Support: Provide technical support through a help desk service, offering guidance on Marine Coatings, Hull Coatings, Anti-Corrosion Coatings, Surface Preparation, Coating Application, and Corrosion Protection.
  • Claim Investigation: Contribute to the investigation and resolution of customer claims and complaints related to Coating Failure Analysis and product performance.
  • Customer Engagement: Visit customer facilities, offering expert advice, conducting formal presentations, and delivering training sessions on Marine Coatings and related technologies.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of learning, adaptability, and commitment to achieving results, consistently delivering value to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned, supporting overall business objectives.

Level of Autonomy:

The Marine Coating and Shipyard Support Specialist operates with significant independence, making key decisions related to product recommendations and proactively working to secure and maintain product qualifications and certifications. While guidance from the manager is available, the role requires a high degree of initiative and judgment.

Job Requirements:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Marine Engineering, or a related scientific field (Required)
    • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science (Preferred)
  • Experience:
    • 7-10 years of experience in coatings science and technology, particularly within the Maritime Industry.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Must have excellent hearing and vision, including peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
  • Must be able to pass a pulmonary function test, maintain a clean-shaven face for respirator fit, and work in a respirator as required.
  • The role involves significant computer use and working with hazardous materials.
